What's SFD

Vehicle Diagnostic Protection (also known as SFD – Schutz Fahrzeug Diagnose) is an additional security layer that requires authorization between the vehicle and manufacturer. It's been introduced by Volkswagen Group (VAG) to help protect vehicle owners from fraud by providing information on who and when has made modifications to their vehicles. SFD restricts functions like adaptations, coding, and parametrizations. This protection applies to the models manufactured from 2020 with the MQB Evo (e.g., VW Golf 8, Skoda Octavia IV, Seat Leon IV, Audi A3 8Y, Q4) and MEB (e.g., VW ID.3, ID.4, Skoda Enyaq) platforms. The control units protected by SFD include Engine Electronics, Central Electrics, Instrument Cluster, Gateway Electrics, Multimedia Unit, and more

WHAT IS SGW / SFD FUNCTION?

This function is used to bypass/unlock the security module (Security Gateway). This module protects the car's main modules from illegal, unauthorized access.

WHY DO CARS NEED TO CONNECT TO SGW / SFD?

When the protection module is enabled, many different diagnostic functions may not work, such as service functions, active tests, codings, or simple access to various modules may be limited. Therefore, these SGW codes provide access to these functions by unlocking the security module.

Otherwise, the ECU will deny access. This applies to tasks like maintenance resets, brake pad replacements, airbag module coding, etc.	Normally, once unlock the modules, it will be operated for a duration of up 90 minutes. The ECU will automatically lock itself, and need to unlock again

Two Factor Authentication

Volkswagen requires two-factor authentication, please install the Google Authenticator app on your phone before proceeding.
After the Google Authenticator app has been successfully installed, follow the instructions to bind it to your Autel account.
1). Open the Google Authenticator app on your phone, press Adda code, then press Enter a setup key;






2). Enter your Autel account name in the Account name field;
3). Enter the 16-digit secret key in the Your key field;
4). Select Time based in Type of key;
5). Press Add to complete the binding of Google Authenticator to your Autel account;
6). After the Autel account is successfully bound, a 6-digit dynamic authentication code will be displayed on your phone. Please press Authenticate on the diagnostic device and enter the latest authentication code to unlock the SFD.
* Note:  For successfully finish the two-factor authentication, make sure the email you used on AUTEL ID can receive emails, if not, please [Switch Account]



How to Renew SFD Subscription

If Volkswagen Auto Group Security Gateway function has been purchased before, then customer can go to OEM Authorization App to renew the subscription
